Internal Hires and Past Lovers

Nothing makes hiring managers happier than hiring internally. They don’t want to have to sift through thousands of mediocre applications again. That previous intern is familiar, gets along with everyone important to them, and already knows their likes and dislikes. You were impressed enough by the first several interviews that they got this far. They didn’t badmouth any of their previous employers, but instead described how those experiences made them grow and become better for you. You trust their integrity and willingness to learn.

You may see a job available at X company, but the posting is really just a formality. They’ll open that window of opportunity just long enough for the previous employee to reapply only to make HR happy and then sweep the shutters shut forever. It doesn’t matter how long you spent on your cover letter because you were never truly being considered anyway. Expect to be ghosted. Plus no one reads cover letters.

It’s just like dating. As you get older, you realize everyone is still in love with someone from the past. And why wouldn’t they be? They don’t want to have to sift through thousands of mediocre dates again. That previous partner is familiar, gets along with everyone important to them, and already knows their likes and dislikes. You were impressed enough by the first several dates that they got this far. They didn’t badmouth any of their previous exes, but instead described how those experiences helped them grow and become better for you. You trust their integrity and willingness to learn.

It’s hard–no it’s IMPOSSIBLE–to ever really have or give a fair chance when reuniting with an ex is still on the table. Sure, you might create a dating app profile. You might meet a few matches. But it doesn’t matter how high quality their photos are or how witty their bio is. They were never really being considered. Expect to ghost. Plus no one reads bios.

Happy Ghosting,
